Circa 1890.
Native American woman with a feather headdress and long black hair, painted in red, ocher, green, brown and black, and with parcel-gilt details, on a stepped pyramidal base. Around the base Cigars, Cigarettes, Tobaccos is painted. Formerly the property of the consignors father, who had a sign painting store in Chicago for many years.
Inscribed on top of the base is CA k72774 Ockes. On the back of the base K929944 is inscribed, with Property of A.J. Ockes Sign Co. Chicago Il. is painted. Note the numeral on the base is the owners drivers license number, roughly 65 years ago.
In the same family, approximately 1928 to 1952 thence by descent to his son.
Acquired by a sign-painter in Chicago, 1920s.
Condition: Repainting to face, hair near face, and regilding of headdress. Also, loss to one feather tip. Otherwise, in original condition, with minor chips, flakes etc.
