American Civil War Masonic Commemorative Carved Walking Stick.

Carved: Los Gatos, CA. Commemorates service in the Civil War.
Dated 1890.
Carved walking stick of natural appearance, the carving by J. W. Sheffield. The carver commemorates his service in the Civil War. He is listed as Warren Sheffield in Civil War records.
The handle of the stick carved and inscribed: J W Sheffield /Corporal/Born October 1st 1845 /in Brighton/Livingston/Mich. Enlisted/Oct 10 1861/Co G/1st Mich/E Mo Co. /Discharged/Oct 1 1865/In God We/Trust/The Union is Our Shield/. Another aspect of the handle is carved with major battles in which Sheffield participated: Mill Spring/ Siege Corinth/ Avry/Boro/ Raleigh/Bentonville. Inscribed 1st Mich Engrs Mech around a castle tower over a saddled horse facing left. The handle top carved with union emblemata and crossed rifles with plough

The pommel inscribed Charity Loyalty Fraternity around the Carved Star of the Republic, and crossed union emblems, the very front of the handle carved with owl, etc.

A lower knob of the cane carved with a anchor and the lowest knob just above the tip is carved with a face, possibly a self portrait.

Between these two knobs, sits a knob inscribed: Made /by him /at Los Gatos Cal /1890.
Approximate dimensions: 29 3/4 inches long..
Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War 1861-1865.
Condition: Some of the thin bark layer has chipped off, with no effect on the carvings.
