High necked front, decollete back, with large velvet cap puff sleeves designed to look like foliate petals. bias cut skirt, with velvet foliate designs. Black silk gauze, velvet trim and satin slip.

Condition: Very good condition. The slip has been let out on both sides of front velvet inset panel, to accommodate a larger bust.3/8 hole to lower bust area, near left seam.
The style of dress is one made famous by the Italian Impressionist painter Giovanni Boldini (Born Ferrara, Italy, 1842 - Died. Paris, France, 1931), whose full- and half-length portraits of society ladies, their sleeves and gown tops nearly down to their elbows and nearly exposing their busts, are well-known to those who follow Edwardian dress. The National Portrait Gallerys Portrait of Gertrude Elizabeth, ne Blood, Lady Colin Campbell (Acc. 1630) is very close to this dress design.
