Doorway panel 5 from the Herter house at 2970 Broadway, San Francisco, painted en trompe loeil style with a pair of white peafowl to either side of a faux arch above the door cut out against a stylized foliate ground replicating the effect of tiles. The border with faux boiserie, scrolls, brackets and ovulos.

Provenance: Property Deaccessioned from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Albert Herter was the son of Christian Herter of Herter Brothers furniture and interior design fame. Albert was a painter, muralist, tapestry designer and owned Herter Looms, founded in 1909 shortly after Herter Brothers became an extinct company.

Albert Herter became a member of the National Academy of Design Society of American Artists American Watercolor Society and Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, France.

This is one of nine decorative panels painted by Albert Herter for the M.H.de Young California Street Residence. Michaans is pleased to offer this once in a lifetime opportunity to own all nine panels from the former dining room of the de Young residence.
